The beat goes on in Pam's travels to meet the people

A women with boundless energy and commitment, Pam has continued making the rounds in our towns to meet the people. She attended the Glen Flora Days parade in Rusk County on July 31, 2010. On July 30, they held a Friday Night Hog Rodeo and on Saturday the Parade and Pork Dinner. Great fun. She spent Friday and Saturday at the Taylor County Fair as well. The theme was the same: change the leadership in Madison. Pam participated in two parades, the Lublin Days parade also in Taylor County on July 25 sponsored by the American Legion Post, and the annual Northland Mardi Gras on July 18 in Ladysmith, Rusk County. There are some great photos of the latter two events in the photo gallery.

Rusk County residents worried about so-called "Prevailing Wage" legislation

Pam attended a meeting with the Rusk County Town Association in July 29, 2010. She and other candidates spoke. The discussions centered mainly on the prevailing wage law passed under Senator Decker's "leadership." This law is another "job killer" put in place by the opposition. It lowered the threshold of local construction projects that require prevailing wages from $234,000 to $25,000. What this means is that the government decides on what the prevailing wage ought to be for these projects, often directed by what the unions are paying, and then demands all workers on these projects receive the same pay. This undermines what the towns want to do, and can do, with locally hired workers who will work for less than this so called prevailing wage, which is arguably not a prevailing wage at all. The net effect is that towns have to scrub projects because they cannot afford them, and that means potential jobs are lost. Senator Decker, now that the dirty work has been done, says he wants to compromise on the legislation. The voters at this meeting want the entire law repealed! Pam has learned the same feelings exist in Marathon and Portage Counties. She knows from previous trips to Rusk County that this is a huge issue there.

Lots going on in Weston

Pam spent a great day in Weston outside Wausau on July 24, 2010. She met a lot of residents at the Fireman's Breakfast, Farmers' Market, and the Health Fair in Kennedy Park, and then stepped out and hit the doors, visiting with people at their homes. It is immeasurable what a candidate can pick up and learn from the people.

Wisconsin Supreme Court says legislative raid on Injured Patients
Compensation Fund unconstitutional, huge win for patients

The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued the long-awaited decision in the Wisconsin Medical Society's lawsuit this morning. In a 5-2 decision, the Court determined that the raid of the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund (IPFCF) was unconstitutional. The Court made the following conclusions:

  • Health care providers have a constitutionally protected property interest in the Fund.
  • Health care providers have a right to the security and integrity of the Fund and a right to realize the Fund's investment earnings to moderate, perhaps even lower, their assessments.
  • Health care providers have rights to have excess judgments paid to the proper claimants.
  • The taking of money from the Fund was an unconstitutional taking without just compensation.

Wisconsin Medical Society President Thomas Luetzow, MD, said this in a press lease: "We are extremely gratified with today's Supreme Court ruling because it is a great victory for patients, their families and health care professionals across Wisconsin. This ruling sends an important message that the Fund is not a piggy bank. The raid was wrong, and justice has been served."

The Court remanded the case to the trial court for the entry of an order requiring the state to replace the money taken from the Fund, together with lost earnings and interest. The Court also issued a permanent injunction prohibiting the state from transferring money out of the Fund.

Dr. Pam Galloway applauded this decision in her own press release today.

Busy weekend builds even more momentum

Friends of Pam Galloway for State Senate held a fundraiser in Wausau on July 17. A wonderful group of supporters attended and demonstrated their commitment to Dr. Galloway's campaign. Afterwards, she charged off to Knowlton to attend its Summer Fest. On July 18, Pam went to the Northland Mardi Gras Parade in Ladysmith, and the weather could not have been more cooperative. The core of Dr. Galloway's campaign has been to be with the citizens of the 29th State Senate District as much as she possibly can, often at the expense of other "things to do." This reflects a recognition that the power is with the people, the people have the best ideas and insights, and the candidate stands to learn a lot from talking with them. Her experience has been since the start that the residents of the district appreciate the chance to meet her and talk to her. Best of all, it's a lot of fun for the candidate.

Create an environment of prosperity in Wisconsin

Today I was doing in doors in Mosinee and met two people on one street who had been unemployed for over a year, and wanted to know what I was going to do about it. I told them I would try to create an environment of prosperity in Wisconsin by making this a more attractive state for companies to stay here or come here, since companies create jobs.

Visiting people at July 4th parades lots of fun

Pam and her team romped around the 29th District during the July 4th celebrations, fighting off the inclement weather and still having fun. She and her team attended the Jump River Parade and then went off to the Phillips parade, talking to people, getting her message out. On July 3 she attended the Willow Springs Independence Day celebration in the town of Maine. Pam noted that people there "seemed particularly concerned about out of control government spending." National press reports indicate that this problem to many is as important or even more important than the unemployment problem.

Wisconsin Taxpayer Alliance says Wisconsin's major problems are going unaddressed

The March 16, 2010 edition of Focus, a newsletter produced by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, says that there has been a good amount of political change in the state over the years but very little change "when it comes to the state's leading problems." The Alliance says, "With the possible exception of health care, the arguable to-do list is the same as it was 10 or even 20 years ago: lack of 21st-century jobs, never-ending state budget crises, strained state-local relations, unstable school finance, political dysfunction, and outdated approaches to higher education, transportation and taxation." The Alliance argues that there are the usual superficial explanations. But it goes on to say that the real culprits include structural deficits putting the state on "the fiscal brink;" "excessive partisanship" making "bipartisan cooperation all but impossible to achieve;" too many legislators using their positions as long-term careers upon which they rely financially; and institutional obstacles to enable new blood to break into the legislature; and finally, statutes that favor the status quo. The Alliance also suggests that too many citizens are sitting on the sidelines instead of advocating policy change.

Unemployment in Wisconsin worsens in March

John Schmid of Milwaukee's Journal sentinel reported on April 15, 2010 that the unemployment rate in Wisconsin moved higher in March 2010. he reported we lost 2,200 jobs and our rate is now 8.8 percent. There is a hopeful note, however, with manufacturing adding jobs, though not enough to satisfy our needs. Schmid noted that the key is to attract "next generation" manufacturing jobs. This is a high priority in Milwaukee, and should be for the central and northern regions of the state as well. I see the central region as having great potential here, especially as we grow our medical center hub for this region of the state. I can envision this medical build-up to attract high-value medical, data communications, and manufacturing jobs right here, in our region. All we have to do is create the enabling environment for this to happen.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure leadership conference in Dallas, great to be back home on campaign trail

Attending the Susan G. Komen for the Cure leadership conference in Dallas was great, but even greater was returning home and hitting the campaign trail. While going door to door many voters expressed anger or frustration over the looming health care bill debacle. I encouraged people to be upbeat, as our battle against this legislation is only beginning. Among other avenues we can fight it at the state level.

"Doing the doors," a camapigner's way of saying visiting with people house-to-house

Today while doing doors several voters expressed frustration at legislators who go to Madison and develop the "Madison mentality", and forget about the promises they made on the campaign trail. Discussions were had about term limitations either by legislation or by informed voters voting legislators out of office. Not everyone was in favor of defined term limits.

American Dream Summit, Wisconsin Dells. Pam to have booth and will participate with "Hands off my health care panel"

On the first day of this summit, we set up the Friends of Pam Galloway booth at the Defending the American Dream Summit in Chula Vista. The crowd was really pumped! On this day, we heard from Tim Phillips, President of Americans for Prosperity, Joe the Plumber, John Fund of the Wall Street Journal, author Grover Norquist and Lord Christopher Monkton. The common themes were fiscal responsibility, less government spending and less government intrusion in our lives.

It's now the second and final day. Great speeches this morning, including Herman Cain, John Fund, Steve Moore, Linda Hansen and many others!

42nd Annual Wausau Spring Gun Show

Notes from the gun show at Marathon Park: Sales seemed down due to the economy, the state regulates what motor cycle riders can and cannot wear (what a slippery slope when you let the government regulate anything!), a lot of anger still out there over the smoking ban. I showed some of my parents World war II memorabilia to an expert at the gun show at Marathon Park. He was able to explain a lot about what my dad did that I'd never been aware of. Some of my mom's items included her letters from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), shellbacks (certificates she got when she crossed the equator) and a photo of her in native dress (a sari).

Price County Lion's Club meeting

Last night I was in Price County at a Lion's Club meeting. Great frustration was expressed at the school funding formula. We talked about the difficulties of recruiting business to a community where the school system is challenged. Others topics of frustration were the DNR, and a sense of a disconnect between Madison a..nd the 29th senate district. We discussed the positive effects of medical tort reform in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin list about 163,000 jobs in 2009

It will not surprise most in the state that we lost 163,000 jobs in 2009 in Wisconsin. Our unemployment rate is estimated at about 9 percent, up from 5.9 percent a year ago. Everyone agrees that action must be taken to change this course. One side believes government is the answer, that government creates jobs. The only jobs government creates are those paid for by the taxpayer. Pam believes that government must create an enabling environment that will attract new businesses and enable existing ones to grow and prosper. This requires private sector investment and entrepreneurial risk-taking. In turn, these things demand lowering taxes, streamlining regulations, reining in spending, and promoting quality education to our future workers.

Governor Doyle tells us what we already know in State of the State

Governor Doyle delivered his final State of the State address in Madison on January 26, 2010. During his presentation, he said this:

"Far too many remain unemployed. Far too many are making do with a paycheck that doesn't go as far as it used to, and far too many are living with the fear that they might lose their jobs and their healthcare."

The question left unanswered is how much of that was created by the tax and spend executive and legislature in Madison? My view is a lot, arguably most. The state government must reduce our tax burden and create an environment in the state that attracts businesses and motivates individuals to start their own. The state government has done just the opposite. That's why fresh new faces are so urgently needed in Madison.

No smirkin', but the voters spoke loudly in Massachusetts

We Republicans fighting to win your vote for public offices throughout the state are pleased to see Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts, but there can be no smirkin'. We are invigorated and I for one will continue to be engaged with you and working as hard as I can to finally get you some long overdue and fresh representation in Madison. Brown's was a national victory. My job is to give you a victory in the 29th State Senate District and get you back in charge.

Dr. Galloway's Prescription:

Restart the heart of Wisconsin's economy.
